Great hotshot drivers can make more money than a semi by hauling partials.
The concept is simple: your dispatcher books two separate loads from two shippers that go towards the same area. For example, I might book a load in Chicago, IL and Hammond, IN with deliveries in Akron, OH and Ashtabula, OH. Instead of only making $1100 on the lane, the second partial adds anywhere from $500 - $1100!
Every time I partial out a truck, our combined rate per mile exceeds the market rate for 48,000 pound flatbeds. It takes a lot of skill and hustle to partial out a truck. However, the rewards speak for themselves. I haven’t met anybody who would rather haul for $2.50 per mile versus $4.00 per mile.
